Data engineering sits in the upper half of every published specialism table. Arc's 2026 guide puts AI infrastructure and MLOps at $120–200 per hour and AI/ML engineering at $110–190 per hour, against $60–130 for general full-stack work. Its Western Europe regional band, which covers the UK, runs $70–120 per hour, and its staff/principal experience band runs $120–220 per hour.

Those numbers are useful context and almost useless for a UK contractor in isolation, because a UK day rate does not describe take-home until you know its IR35 status. The same £600 day rate produces materially different net income inside and outside the off-payroll rules, which is why UK contract markets quote the two separately and why comparing a UK day rate to a European hourly rate without establishing status is meaningless.

The reason this page leads with regulation rather than rates is that the regulation moved in April 2026, in the direction of the contractor, for a specific and identifiable set of clients.

United Kingdom specifics

IR35 after April 2026

The off-payroll working rules decide who determines your employment status for tax and who carries the liability for getting it wrong. On 6 April 2026 the thresholds that define an exempt small company rose substantially.

The small-company thresholds rose, and about 14,000 companies moved

From 6 April 2026, the turnover threshold for small-company status rose from £10.2m to £15m and the balance sheet threshold from £5.1m to £7.5m, with the 50-employee test unchanged; a company needs to meet two of the three. Industry analysis put roughly 14,000 companies moving from medium to small as a result. Small companies are exempt from the off-payroll rules, so for those clients the responsibility for determining status returns to the contractor's own limited company.

Newly small clients no longer issue status determinations

A client that has moved into the small category no longer has to assess your status or issue a Status Determination Statement before your first payment. That is genuinely more freedom and genuinely more responsibility: the assessment still has to be made and defended, only now by you. If you are contracting with a mid-sized client, it is worth asking directly whether they have reassessed their size under the new thresholds, because many have not yet worked through the implications.

Umbrella liability changed at the same time

Also from April 2026, agencies and end clients can be jointly and severally liable where an umbrella company fails to account correctly for PAYE and NIC. The effect is to make the supply chain far more interested in which umbrella is used. Expect fewer umbrella options offered, more scrutiny of the ones that are, and less tolerance for arrangements that look unusual.

Quote inside and outside rates separately, and say why

An inside-IR35 engagement taxes your income broadly as employment while giving you none of the employment protections, so the same headline number is worth substantially less. Publishing two rates — and being able to explain the difference in one sentence — reads as competence rather than as a negotiating tactic. It also stops you accidentally anchoring an outside-IR35 negotiation on an inside-IR35 number.

Four things every source on this page has in common. A rate guide that does not state these is asking you to mistake a range for a measurement.

None of them measure utilisation

A rate is only half of an income. Every source on this page reports what an hour costs and none report how many hours were sold. A freelancer at $120/hr who bills 40% of a year earns less than one at $70/hr who bills 85%, and no rate guide anywhere will tell you which situation you are walking into. This is the specific gap TechBaro's index is built to measure.

None publish a sample size per cell

A regional or role band is only as trustworthy as the number of observations behind that particular cell. freelancermap publishes its overall sample; none of these sources publish how many observations sit behind an individual figure. A range derived from twelve contracts and a range derived from twelve thousand look identical on the page.

Ranges hide their own shape

"$70–120/hr" tells you nothing about whether most people are at $75 or at $115. A median without a distribution, or a range without a density, can support almost any conclusion the reader arrives with — which is why two freelancers can read the same guide and both feel confirmed.

What is the going day rate for a freelance data engineer in the UK?

No source in this guide publishes a UK data engineering day rate. Arc's 2026 hourly bands give the nearest context: $120–200/hr for AI infrastructure and MLOps, $110–190/hr for AI/ML engineering, $120–220/hr at staff or principal level, and $70–120/hr for Western European developers generally. Is an outside-IR35 contract worth a lower day rate than an inside one?

Often, yes, and that is the entire point of quoting them separately. An inside-IR35 engagement is taxed broadly as employment without employment rights, so a lower outside-IR35 rate can produce higher net income than a higher inside rate. The comparison has to be run on your own numbers, but taking the larger headline figure without doing that arithmetic is a common and expensive mistake.

Does my client's size determine my IR35 status?

No — it determines who decides and who is liable. A small client is exempt from the off-payroll rules, so the determination falls to your own limited company and the liability sits there too. The underlying question of whether the engagement genuinely reflects self-employment is unchanged; only the location of the decision moves.

Should I use an umbrella company?

It depends on the engagement, and from April 2026 you may have less choice. Because agencies and end clients can now be jointly and severally liable for an umbrella's PAYE and NIC failures, many have narrowed their approved lists sharply. If you are asked to use a specific umbrella, that is usually a supply-chain risk decision rather than an arbitrary one; if you are offered an arrangement promising unusually high retention, treat it as the risk it is.
